Thiruvananthapuram: The Election Commission of India has issued a notice to the Kerala government in connection with its recent decision to scrap all cases related to anti-CAA protests. Through the notice, the commission has apparently demanded an explanation from the government regarding the decision, since the announcement on scrapping the cases was made after the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) had come into effect. The state government is expected to give an explanation today.
It was Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan who made the announcement regarding scrapping of cases related to anti-CAA protests in the state. Since long, several parties, including muslim organisations, have been raising the demand for calling off the criminal cases registered against persons for taking part in the protest. Out of a total 835 cases, Pinarayi announced that 629 cases were being removed from the registers.
However, this irked the state BJP leaders who accused the ruling LDF government of trying to appease certain sections of the society ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. They brought the matter to the notice of the Election Commision.
