Kozhikode: Dr. Beena Philip, fondly called as Beena teacher, will become the mayor of Kozhikode where LDF continued its administration for the 46th consecutive year. She will be the 4th woman to hold the position.

Beena will become the mayor of Kozhikode after being the principal at Nadakkavu Government Girls Vocational Higher Secondary School and Azchavattom Government Higher Secondary School.

Beena used to take classes in parenting and learning strategy. She was part of the team that started the Spectrum Project in Nadakkavu school, which marked the changing face of government schools.

Beena contested as the CPI (M) candidate from Pottammal ward (no: 29) in the corporation and won with a majority or 652 votes. She defeated Congress backed independent candidate Lijeena Sajeev.

As the mayor post was reserved for women, 2020 became the 4th election in the history of Kozhikode Corporation’s 58-year history. Kozhikode was the first corporation in Kerala to have a female mayor. Haimavathi Thayat became the Kozhikode mayor in 1988-89.
