Both fronts have suffered setbacks with their projected mayoral candidates losing their seats.

Kozhikode Corporation is heading for a closely watched mayoral decision after the local body polls threw up a fractured verdict. With no front securing a clear majority, the next few days will decide who runs the civic body and how stable the administration will be.
The CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerged as the single largest front but fell four seats short of a majority. This has made the task of forming an administration difficult. The combined strength of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the BJP is politically stronger than the LDF on the council floor, especially when key decisions on finance and public works require council approval. The LDF will need support from councillors outside its front to govern smoothly. The UDF, too, believes it has a strong case to lead the Corporation.
Setback for both fronts
Both fronts have lost their projected mayoral candidates. The LDF’s C.P. Musafar Ahamed, the sitting Deputy Mayor, lost from Meenchanda, while the UDF’s P.M. Niyas lost from Paroppady. With the new council’s swearing-in fixed for December 21, both camps are now racing against time to finalise names.
LDF leans towards Jayasree
The LDF is expected to announce its mayoral candidate on December 18, following approval from the state committee. Three names are under final consideration: Health Standing Committee chairperson Dr S. Jayasree, LDF council party leader O. Sadasivan, and P. Rajeev from Beypore Port ward. Among them, Jayasree is being given priority due to her experience. If she is chosen, the Deputy Mayor will be a woman, with A. Anita Kumari from Mathottam ward likely to be considered.
UDF waits, BJP factor looms
The UDF is also weighing multiple names, including K.C. Shobhita, C.P. Salim and S.K. Aboobakker. The front plans to declare its mayoral candidate on December 17. While it is not seeking BJP support, it is open to accepting it if offered, making the BJP a key factor in the final outcome.
