Zumba row in Kerala: Certified trainers warn against unregulated school fitness programmes

Does dancing to music alone make it Zumba? Certified instructors under the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) say it does not. They caution that copying movements without the supervision of a registered trainer can do more harm than good to the body.
Their warning comes at a time when Zumba has become a hot topic in Kerala, following the state government’s move to introduce the dance-based fitness programme in schools. This initiative, directed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aims to reduce stress among schoolchildren and tackle the rising menace of drug abuse among young people. As a result, several schools have begun offering Zumba training from the current academic year.
However, the decision has sparked controversy. On one side, several Muslim organisations have raised concerns about the inclusion of the Zumba fitness programme in the school-level anti-drug campaign. On the other, Sangh Parivar-affiliated outfit Bharatiya Vichara Kendram has strongly criticised the move, calling it a "cultural invasion" and a "show of hypocrisy".
The debate has extended online, where netizens are questioning whether there is scientific evidence that Zumba benefits all students, whether the instructors in schools are qualified, and if the programme adds to teachers’ workload.
ZIN’s statement comes amid these growing concerns, highlighting the need for certified guidance when engaging in such fitness activities.
Structured training required for safe practice
Zumba Fitness, LLC is the licensing authority for the programme, which follows a global training model.
Instructors provide two days of direct training before offering continued learning through an official ZINPlay app. Participants then progress through levels such as B1, B2, B3, and specialisations. After training, certified participants receive access to choreographed steps and music through the app.
Wide range of formats available
Zumba has evolved into 12 different formats, including versions for children and water-based exercises to reduce joint strain. There are currently 270 certified instructors in Kerala. The fitness form, combining dance and exercise, was introduced in 1990 by Colombian dancer Beto Perez.
Multiple musical styles integrated
Zumba is primarily based on salsa, cumbia, merengue, and reggaeton. Over time, it has incorporated several other musical styles including samba, hip-hop, electric, pop, and bhangra—with bhangra being the only Indian rhythm included.
Training must follow proper sequence
Senior trainer Naveen Nandan emphasised that learners must train at centres managed by the Zumba Instructor Network. The programme begins in three stages: a warm-up to prepare muscles and joints, a workout phase, and a cool-down to bring the body back to normal. Deviating from this structure can lead to injuries. Trainers determine the suitable training duration based on individual physical traits.
