As Kerala prepares for Diwali, fireworks shops across the state are buzzing with activity, drawing in crowds eager to purchase colorful and affordable firecrackers. From smokeless sparklers to lotus wheels and ground spinners, this year's selection offers fresh options for revelers. Traditional favorites like ‘Olappadakkam’ are also in high demand, with fireworks sourced from both local producers and the renowned firecracker hub, Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu.
To mitigate air pollution, the state government has permitted the use of firecrackers on October 31, Diwali day, only between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm. Similar time restrictions apply for Christmas and New Year celebrations, with firecracker use allowed only between 11:55 pm and 12:30 am. These guidelines are in line with directives from the National Green Tribunal and the State Pollution Control Board.
Only green firecrackers permitted
As part of a green initiative, only eco-friendly firecrackers are allowed for Diwali celebrations. The government has issued instructions to District Collectors and District Police Chiefs to ensure the exclusive sale and use of green firecrackers during the festival and to uphold the prescribed time restrictions.
Designated firecracker-free zones
For air pollution control, the state government has declared a 100-meter radius around silent zones as firecracker-free areas. This restriction applies to locations such as hospitals, courts, educational institutions, and places of worship, with strict guidelines issued to prevent noise disturbances in these sensitive areas.
