Thiruvananthapuram: Debt-ridden Supplyco is mulling to venture into alcohol sales. The thoughts come at a time when its Christmas sales are shrouded in uncertainty.

The civil supplies corporation has begun preliminary studies for engaging in alcohol business on the lines of Consumerfed. However, Suoplyco will move forward only if the government approves their plans. It should be noted that apart from Beverages outlets, it is the Consumerfed that runs small liquor stores in the state. The federation currently owns 41 retail liquor stores and three beer-wine parlours.

Supplyco, with stores across the state, has enough facilities to facilitate alcohol sales. The civil supplies corporation will be eligible for 20 pc of the profits through such sales.

It should be noted that the state government has so far remained unsuccessful in opening 68 additional liquor stores for reducing rush at the outlets of the Beverages Corporation. It is reported that the officials have failed in finding suitable buildings. This can be deemed as an opportunity for Supplyco which is reeling under crisis. If the government approves Supplyco’s proposal, then the excise formalities will be expedited.
