The state has woken up to the CUSAT (Cochin University of Science and Technology) tragedy where 4 were killed and over 60 injured during a stampede that occurred at the music concert held here on Saturday as part of a tech fest. The deceased have been identified as second year students Athul Thambi, Ann Rifta Roy, Sarah Thomas and Alwin Joseph. Preliminary reports indicate that Alwin is not a student at CUSAT.
Tragedy struck when students who had gathered at the open air auditorium to attend the concert organised by the School of Engineering Sciences suddenly rushed in when rain started falling causing the stampede. Reportedly, due to the sudden influx of large number of students, many standing atop stairs fell on top of those standing below while others stepped on the fallen individuals causing serious injuries.
The tech fest began on Friday and the musical concert was planned as the culmination event. Since it was a tech fest, many students from other colleges were also present at the event. The condition of a few students continues to be critical.
