New Delhi: CPM leader and former MP PK Sreemathy’s hand bag was stolen during a train journey. The bag contained cash, gold jewellery and a mobile phone. The theft occurred while she was travelling by train from Kolkata to Bihar. Sreemathy was travelling to attend a Mahila Association conference. She began her journey on Tuesday night. It was only this morning, after waking up on reaching Bihar, that she realised the bag was missing. Important documents were also inside the bag.

PK Sreemathy was travelling along with Mahila Association National General Secretary Mariam Dhawale. She alleged that there was no security on the train and that even after lodging a complaint, the police behaved irresponsibly.

“After a two-day conference in Kolkata, I was travelling with Mariam Dhawale to Samastipur. We left Kolkata around 8 pm. We were told to get down at a station called Darsing Sarai. I went to sleep around 11 pm. Until then, the bag was with me. I had kept it near my head. I immediately tried to lodge a complaint and even pulled the chain, but no one came. After stopping for some time, the train moved on. The police, too, behaved in a very irresponsible manner. People from other compartments later came and said their bags and belongings had also been stolen,” PK. Sreemathy said.

She added that officials contacted her only after the Chief Minister’s Office was approached, following which a complaint was formally registered. According to information, the bag contained around ₹40,000 in cash.
