CPI warns of an anti-incumbency wave in Kerala and criticises several Chief Minister decisions as unilateral following local body election setbacks.

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI has stated that an anti-government wave has emerged in the state and that it is not possible to move forward without acknowledging this. This assessment by the party’s State Executive Committee comes in the wake of the setback faced in the local body elections. On the election defeat, the CPI has taken a stance opposite to that of the CPM.
A major erosion of minority votes has been observed. The attitude displayed by the Chief Minister towards SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan is considered a contributing factor. Accompanying someone who made communal remarks has reportedly led to the Muslim minority distancing itself from the left. The Chief Minister was expected to adopt an approach that corrected Vellappally while keeping him engaged. These views were expressed by CPI leaders during a committee convened to review the election results.
Party leaders pointed out that “several decisions taken by the Chief Minister have been unilateral, which has affected the front”.
CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam’s view that public opinion would be taken into account was also criticised. The party argued that the Communist Party has its own approach and any deviation from it should not be expressed publicly through the media.
To ensure continuity of Left-wing governance in the upcoming assembly elections, corrections must be made where necessary, and progress should continue accordingly, the committee observed. Detailed reviews must be conducted at the district level. Special scrutiny is required in constituencies where the CPI is contesting, it added.
The committee also decided that all district councils should convene within 10 days to evaluate the election results and prepare reports.
