Kozhikode: In a latest development, convicts in the high-profile TP Chandrasekharan murder case have been granted parole once again. KK Mohammed Shafi and K Shinoj were reportedly allowed 15 days of parole, according to Kannur jail authorities, who confirmed that the accused would be released on regular parole.

Recurring paroles

Earlier, TK Rajeesh, the fourth accused sentenced to life imprisonment in the case, was also granted parole for 20 days, marking his second parole within three months. The parole was granted with strict conditions, including a prohibition on entering Kannur and Kozhikode districts. Rajeesh had previously been granted a 30-day parole starting August 1, after which he underwent six weeks of Ayurvedic treatment before returning to jail on 7 December.

Growing public discontent

The repeated granting of parole has reignited debates over alleged irregularities in the parole process for convicts involved in this politically sensitive case. The recurring paroles have sparked widespread public criticism, with the ruling CPM government facing scrutiny for allegedly making the process easier for those serving sentences. RMPI leader and MLA KK Rema, widow of TP Chandrasekharan, has vocally criticised the government over the repeated paroles.

Chandrasekharan, 51, was attacked on 4 May 2012 when a car hit the motorcycle he was riding, throwing him off the vehicle. According to police reports, the attackers, who were travelling in the car, assaulted him with sharp weapons and hacked him to death after he fell from his motorcycle.
