Thiruvananthapuram: The dispute over the excessive time taken by Opposition Leader VD Satheesan continued, leading to an uproar and strong protests from the opposition. Satheesan had accused the Speaker of intervening while he was speaking the previous day. The incidents that occurred in the assembly today were a continuation of what happened the day before.
The opposition’s protest stemmed from the Speaker’s request to stop Satheesan's speech when it exceeded nine minutes. The Opposition Leader, clearly upset, made it clear that he would not back down, which led to an argument.
Satheesan was discussing how the government was neglecting the backward sections of society when the Speaker intervened. Satheesan responded, saying that it was up to the Speaker to decide whether the session should continue, but that he would not allow it to proceed if the Speaker kept interrupting him. He also emphasized the importance of speaking with dignity in the Assembly. However, the Speaker clarified that his intervention occurred only after nine minutes had passed.
Following this, Opposition MLAs gathered in front of the Speaker's dais in protest. Meanwhile, Speaker A.N. Shamsheer switched off Satheesan's microphone and demanded that the members return to their seats. As the situation remained tense, the Speaker turned off the mic and moved on to the next procedure, a point of order.
