Bilaspur: The nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh were not granted bail today, as the prosecution strongly opposed their plea. The hearing at the Bilaspur court has concluded, and the verdict has been postponed to Saturday. According to official sources, the court is expected to deliver its decision on the bail application by 11 a.m. tomorrow.

The prosecution argued that the investigation is still in its preliminary stage, justifying the denial of bail at this point. The nuns have already spent eight days in jail. If bail is not granted on Saturday, they will remain in custody for at least two more days.

The nuns will only be able to approach the High Court on Monday, as Sunday is a holiday. Even then, the High Court is expected to first seek a detailed report from the state government before considering any bail application.

The current situation appears to contradict the assurances reportedly given to the Church by the Central Government, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP. When asked about the prosecution’s opposition in court, Malayali lawyer Gopakumar--who has been advising the BJP on the matter--said the developments in court were part of a standard legal procedure.
