Pathanamthitta: The Chengannur-Pamba railway line project is progressing with a focus on enhancing facilities for pilgrims heading to Sabarimala, rather than immediate financial gains. The project aims to improve accessibility to the Sabarimala temple, especially for out-of-station pilgrims, with the full cost covered by the railways.
The Southern Railway headquarters in Chennai is fast-tracking the Chengannur-Pamba route despite criticism from the Center regarding the State's lack of cooperation on the Angamaly-Erumeli Sabari Railway project. A detailed plan for the Chengannur-Pamba line, initially estimated at Rs 7,000 crore, is being revised to reduce costs. The updated Detailed Project Report (DPR) is set to be submitted to the Railway Board by the end of August after receiving approval from Southern Railway.

The railway line will primarily operate during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, while its use during other times, such as the five-day openings on every Malayalam month, has yet to be decided. The railways are open to considering service based on demand from the Devaswom Board.
Railway officials point out that some pilgrimage routes abroad operate only during specific periods, and similar services could be beneficial for the Chengannur-Pamba route. The development of Chengannur railway station, with an investment of Rs 360 crore, is also seen as a positive aspect for the project.
The proposed 60 km route will feature four stations: Chengannur, Aranmula, Vadasserikkara, and Pamba, with an underground section planned for the Nilakkal route. The journey is expected to take about 50 minutes, with Vande Metro trains of up to 16 coaches running. The stations at Aranmula, Vadasserikkara, and Pamba will be modelled after metro stations, while Chengannur will become a junction station. The new railway station in Pamba is planned near the Pamba KSRTC stand.
