Thiruvananthapuram: Hinting a change in the stance of the party and the government in appointing independent chancellors to the state universities, CPM state secretary MV Govindan on Tuesday said governor can be removed as chancellor.

The vice-chancellors are being removed citing technical reasons. If that is the case, the chancellor can also be removed, he said.

Earlier, when the tension over university appointments had escalated, governor Arif Mohammad Khan had asked the government to remove him as the chancellor. However, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan insisted that the governor may continue in the post and said that the government has no intention to remove him from the post.

The higher education commission also had recommended independent chancellors who are part of the syndicate of the universities.

However, after governor sought the resignation of vice-chancellors of nine universities in the state in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict against the VC of KTU, Pinarayi said the government may have to consider the option to remove the governor as chancellor. “We never thought about it. But now it seems we have to,” he said as a reply to a question of a media person.

Govindan on Tuesday also said that there is a riot in the UDF over the stance against the Governor. He was hinting at the different opinions expressed by Congress and Muslim League leaders.

Taking a dig at the opposition leader, Govindan said: “VD Satheesan is also part of the Save University Forum-governor nexus that aims to destroy universities.”

“People will resist the RSS attacks,” he added.

Meanwhile, LDF welcomed the stand of Muslim League in the matter. Unlike Congress, League did not welcome the governor's decision.
