Families in Kerala are using QR codes on tombstones to share the life stories of their loved ones. This innovative blend of tradition and technology offers a touching tribute.

Kerala: In a touching blend of tradition and technology, families in Kerala are pioneering a heartfelt way to preserve the memories of their departed loved ones by embedding QR codes on tombstones.
A recent video that went viral on Instagram showed a visitor scanning a metal QR code at a cemetery. To their surprise, a dedicated website opened, revealing detailed information about the person buried there, including their name, photograph, origin, and even personal milestones. Tabs such as bio, memories and timeline gave the viewer a deeper glimpse into the individual’s life, showing photos, stories, and family information from their spouse and children to grandchildren and in-laws.
“This isn’t just a grave. It’s a story that lives on,” read the caption on the video that has already garnered over 1.6 million views.
The concept, while widely appreciated for its emotional depth, also sparked mixed reactions online. Many users admired the innovation, calling it a "lovely idea" and even expressing a wish to have similar tombstones themselves.
A grieving family’s personal tribute sparked the trend
While the video sparked wide interest, a similar initiative had already made headlines earlier in Kerala. After the sudden passing of Dr. Iwin Francis, a promising young doctor who collapsed on a shuttle court at just 26, his family felt an indescribable void.
In their grief, his sister Evelyn, an architect based in Oman, created a memorial website in his honour. A QR code linked to that site was engraved on his tomb at Kuriachira Church in Thrissur, allowing visitors to revisit Iwin’s life through photos, music clips, and stories. The site opens with a powerful tribute titled “A Jack of All Trades,” showcasing Iwin’s passion for music, photography, and tech, he was skilled in playing drums, guitar, and decoding software.
