Kumbala: A student succumbed to his injuries sustained in a car accident on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Muhammed Farhas (17), a Plus Two student of Govt Higher Secondary School in Angadimogar.

The accident happened last week at Kattathadka and Farhas sustained severe spinal injuries as a result of the car turning turtle. Three other students in the vehicle escaped miraculously without any injuries. 

The incident took place during Onam celebrations at the school. The police were trailing a vehicle carrying students who were travelling from Angadimogar to Kattathadka and this resulted in the mishap. However, police state that the reckless driving by the students caused the accident.

Prior to the accident, the car was parked on the roadside at Angadimogaru, prompting the police to inspect it. One of the windows of the car was open. When an SI approached the car for inspection, the car suddenly lurched forward scraping against the police vehicle before overturning.

When police came to rescue the students, only one student was lying on the ground. He was rushed immediately to a hospital in Kumbala and subsequently to Mangaluru for medical attention. Police clarified that they were not actively pursuing the students’ car at the time of the accident.

Meanwhile, Muslim League organised a protest demonstration in front of the Kumbala police station condemning the death of the young boy. As the protest gained strength, transfer orders were issued to three police officers in the police station including the SI. SR Rajith (SI), and civil police officers T Deepu and TV Ranjith were moved out of Kumbala.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the youth league had assembled in front of the Kumbala police station, following the boy’s death, demanding imposition of murder charges on police officers involved in the incident. This has led to slight tensions between the police and the youth league activists as well.

Farhas is survived by his mother and four siblings.
