Veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala is set to become Kerala’s Home Minister after Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan visited his residence to offer personal assurances and resolve the cabinet deadlock.

Thiruvananthapuram: In a decisive breakthrough aimed at resolving the internal deadlock over Cabinet formation, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has been allocated the crucial Home Ministry portfolio in the incoming United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
According to reports, the veteran leader and Haripad MLA accepted the position following a personal assurance from Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan during a high-stakes visit to his residence.
The breakthrough came after an unexpected second round of conciliation talks at Chennithala's Vazhuthacaud home. Satheesan arrived at the residence immediately after holding key discussions with Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders at the Cantonment House.
Chennithala, who had previously served as Home Minister between 2014 and 2016, had initially withheld his final decision regarding joining the new Cabinet. He had firmly maintained that he would only participate in the Ministry if given charge of the Home Department, securing the clear number-two position in the government. While initial proposals over the last 24 hours floated the possibility of either the Home or Finance portfolios, Satheesan's direct intervention and personal assurances during the sit-down successfully sealed the agreement.
Following the 45-minute closed-door meeting, both leaders projected a unified front ahead of the official swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Monday. Satheesan downplayed any reports of a rift, describing the interaction as a "meeting of two brothers" and emphasising that the new administration would move forward with total collective effort.
