Thrissur: Body of the youth, who had gone missing from the reservoir of the Peechi Dam here, was recovered on Thursday morning after an extensive search.
Muhammad Yahiya (25), hailing from Tanur in Malappuram, went missing on Wednesday at around 6:30 pm while bathing with two friends in the reservoir.
Yahiya, an MSc Botany student at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, and college unit secretary of SFI, had been interning at the Kerala Forest Research Institute at the time of the accident.
The search operation was conducted by the Fire Force that went on until 11 pm on Wednesday. However, due to unfavourable conditions such as silt and insufficient lighting, the search was temporarily halted. Operations resumed early Thursday morning following which Yahiya's body was recovered.
Despite the drowning occurring in the early evening, the search could only start at 9 pm due to the unavailability of a boat. The Forest Department's boat at Peechi Dam lacked a driver, complicating the search efforts. Minister K Rajan coordinated the search operations.
