A photograph of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sitting on a bench at Kannur railway station has triggered widespread discussion on social media. The image shows Vijayan accompanied by CPM Kannur district secretary K.K. Ragesh and a small number of police personnel while reportedly waiting for a train to Thiruvananthapuram to attend the oath-taking ceremony.

The photograph, showing him in a public space without the large security presence often associated with his tenure in office, has generated sharply divided reactions across social media platforms.

Comparisons with his time in office

Many social media users pointed to what they described as a contrast between the current scene and Vijayan’s years as Chief Minister.

Several comments referred to earlier arrangements during his travels, saying railway stations previously made special seating arrangements and that he was generally accompanied by a large security presence. Critics also revisited claims about long convoys involving dozens of vehicles, including fire engines and ambulances, accompanying his movements.

Some users further referred to earlier allegations that he used lifts for short distances within his official residence and that roads were often cleared of vehicles and pedestrians before his arrival.

The image also prompted fresh discussion around previous claims that black masks and black clothing were restricted during his public appearances to prevent protests.

Former Left loyalist-turned-BJP spokesperson Reji Lukkose also commented on the discussion. Referring to the latest image, he said senior party leaders who once welcomed Vijayan in large numbers were absent during his recent journey.

He described the change as “a form of poetic justice” and “a demonstration of the strength of democracy in action”.

Phrases suggesting that a leader had “returned to being a comrade” and references to a perceived blow to arrogance also appeared widely in online comments.

Supporters cite simplicity and changing roles

Supporters of Vijayan argued that the image did not represent a major shift and said his conduct changes according to the role he occupies.

Some supporters said that unlike Congress leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Oommen Chandy, Vijayan does not rely on PR agencies or photographers to create “simple” public moments.

They also argued that he has travelled by train and auto-rickshaw when required and said the authority attached to his office was linked to his political position rather than personal ego.

Democracy and changing political roles

Others viewed the image as a reflection of democratic change rather than a point of political contest.

They said the photograph served as a reminder that political power is temporary and that leaders eventually return to public spaces used by ordinary citizens. According to such comments, seeing a former leader waiting at a railway station should be viewed as an expression of the democratic process rather than a symbol of defeat.
