Kochi: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Monday reacted to actor Dileep’s acquittal in the 2017 high-profile actress assault case, saying the verdict highlights the judiciary’s role in safeguarding women who choose to stand up for their rights.

He stated that the verdict was a message to everybody that there are courts that will always protect women who choose to defend their rights and speak for their security and protection.

“The Court has spoken, and we are living in a democracy where the Courts have a very significant role in adjudicating these types of crimes and deciding who is guilty and who is not. I understand that the Court has decided he is not guilty, and that this is a message to everybody is the law of the land, and that is what prevails. There are victims in the case, and my sympathies are with her, and our party is always pro-women's rights, and we constantly speak out against the exploitation of women,” Chandrasekhar stated.

He added that the law of the land would prevail, while noting that he did not wish to comment extensively as he was not familiar with all the details of the case.

Veiled allegation of political manipulation

Chandrasekhar further hinted at a history of police manipulation under the rule of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other political parties, including the Congress. He argued that the credibility of the prosecution in Kerala has often been questioned, citing Vijayan’s acquittal in the Lavalin case.
