Bengaluru: BJP leader and former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar lashed out at the CPM-led Kerala State Government over the death of sanitation worker Joy whose body was recovered from Amayizhanchan canal in Thiruvananthapuram three days after he fell in the polluted waterbody.

Calling the Kerala Government “inefficient”, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who had fought to the Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency in the last general elections held in May, said such a predicament has happened when Kerala is ruled by those who claim to be the workers' party.

The BJP leader also condoled the death of Joy on social media platform  X.

“It is deeply saddening that the dead body of Joy, a contract worker who was swept away while cleaning Amayizhanchan canal in Thiruvananthapuram, was recovered from the dirty canal on the third day.

“I waited till now as it was not correct to blame anyone at the time of an accident, as the first priority should be given to the rescue operations. But I think it is unconscionable not to react to this news which the people of Thiruvananthapuram district heard with trepidation,” he wrote.

“The campaign, which was touted as a rescue mission, failed on the third day and the help of the Navy was requested.

“At this juncture we also need to realise that this unfortunate incident in the state capital exposes the inefficiency of the Kerala Government. An incomparable accident has happened in Amayizhanchan canal,” he added.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been moving forward for the past ten years by coordinating Swachh Bharat activities in the country. But we can still see the failure of Kerala in the field of waste treatment and disposal,” he criticised.

“This incident once again proves that poor people who work for their livelihood are becoming the scapegoats of Pinarayi Vijayan Government's mismanagement. It is absolutely ridiculous that this predicament is happening when Kerala is ruled by those who claim to be the workers' party.

“The CPM which is in charge of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation administration should show the political morals to own the failure.

“I share in the grief of the family of Joy who went missing while cleaning the ditch. At least the government should show the courage to find those responsible for this unfortunate incident and take action against them,” he added.
