Kozhikode: A section of the beach park near Bhatt Road has suffered significant damage due to sea swelling. The shoreline in this area has completely eroded, causing the cemented blocks, slabs, and interlocks to disintegrate. The coastal swelling started around 1 PM on Wednesday. Hundreds come to this place to spend their leisure time every day.

This coastal erosion has been occurring gradually over time. The steps leading down to the beach from the park, lamp posts, sitting areas, and other structures have all been toppled down due to the force of the waves.

In response to the potential danger, push-carts were relocated to safer areas, some of them being placed between the shore and the park. Additionally, the dried trees on the beach have collapsed, and the casuarina (kattadi) trees pose a threat as they are uprooted from the ground. The sea even claimed a coconut tree from the vicinity, which has now vanished.

The shore is now scattered with pebbles. Strong waves persisted on Thursday. Despite the absence of heavy rains, strong winds are believed to be the cause of this phenomenon. Local fishermen noted that while coastal swelling occurs annually, the intensity witnessed this time is unprecedented.

To prevent potential accidents, authorities have placed a plastic rope to cordon off the affected area and prevent people from venturing too close to the damaged section. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter to understand the extent of the damage and assess potential risks.
