Kozhikode: Ending years of travel woes for the Malabar region, the Bengaluru-Kannur Express (16511/16512) has finally been extended to Kozhikode. The extended service is set to begin on March 15, offering a much-needed alternative to expensive private buses and overcrowded trains.

Although the Railway Board issued the extension order back in February 2024, technical hurdles delayed the project. MK Raghavan, MP, stated that the constant interventions made in the Ministry of Railways and Parliament have yielded results.

The new service is perfectly timed to benefit the large community of IT professionals, students, and regular traders from Kozhikode working or studying in Bengaluru. By departing Kozhikode at 3:30 pm and arriving in Bengaluru at 6:35 am the following morning, commuters can reach their offices and institutions exactly as the workday begins.

This additional train has been a long-standing requirement, as the only other direct option from Kozhikode was the Kannur-Yesvantpur Express via Salem and private buses.

Beyond the Bengaluru connection, the extension also provides a secondary benefit by reducing the heavy evening congestion in other trains heading from Kozhikode towards the Mangaluru direction.
