Thiruvananthapuram: Auto-rickshaws in Kerala can now operate with state permits, but with specific conditions. These permits allow travel across the state but restrict picking up passengers from corporation and municipal areas. Drivers can drop passengers in urban areas but must return empty.

The state permit fee is set at ₹1,500 for five years, significantly higher than the current district permit fee of ₹300. Previously, district permits allowed auto rickshaws to travel up to 20 km across district borders.

The decision to issue state permits was made during the State Transport Authority meeting in August, following a request from the Kannur Madai Unit of CITU. However, after objections from some groups, the permit conditions were tightened, and the fee was increased.

Despite the expanded travel allowance, the speed limit for auto-rickshaws remains at 50 kmph. This move aims to regulate auto-rickshaw operations while ensuring safety and compliance.
