Kozhikode: Asafak Alam, the Bihari native sent to the gallows in a case for raping-murder of five-year-old girl in Aluva, is the 21st death-row convict in the state. 

The majority of the death-row inmates are housed in Poojappura Central Jail in Thiruvananthapuram --9 convicts. Meanwhile, four inmates each are serving terms in Kannur and Viyyur Jails. 

There are only two gallows - one in Kannur and the other in Thiruvananthapuram to hang the prisoners. 

Since the formation of Kerala state in 1956, 26 inmates have been executed in the state, with the most recent being the hanging of serial killer Ripper Chandran in 1991.

Nino Mathew (Attingal Twin Murders), Girish, Anilkumar (Jet Santhosh murder case), Ajithkumar, Anilkumar, Arun Sasi, K Jithakumar, Sudheesh, Labalu Hasan (Chengannur murder).
