Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant development, the renovation contract for Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station has been given to Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (K-Rail). The modernization project, estimated at Rs 439 crore, aims to equip the station with state-of-the-art facilities, akin to those found in airports.

Under the bounds of the Central Government's Amrit Bharat Station scheme, the renovation is intended to elevate the station's infrastructure and passenger experience. Scheduled to be completed within 42 months, construction work is expected to commence soon.

Following the successful upgrade of Varkala railway station, jointly undertaken by K-Rail and RVNL, the duo is set to embark on enhancing Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. They are also tasked with the construction of 27 railway flyovers.

Similar to airport

Emulating the convenience and comfort of airports, the renovation of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station will feature seats designed for optimal comfort. Separate lounges for departures and arrivals, along with the installation of lifts and escalators, are intended for construction as well.

To streamline passenger flow and minimize congestion, access to platforms will be regulated, allowing entry only at specified times preceding train departures.

The station will exhibit an expanded arrangement of digital display boards communicating train-related information across various sections.

The station's aesthetic will incorporate an aqua-green roof and pillars resembling an elephant's head.

Legacy will be preserved

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station not only serves as a vital transportation hub but also stands as a testament to architectural grandeur.

The architectural integrity of the heritage building, based on ‘Vastu Shastra,’ will be preserved, with new constructions planned only for the southern and northern parts of the station.

The renovation plan encompasses the addition of a multi-level car parking facility capable of accommodating 400 cars and two-wheelers.

Leading in revenue

The station garners the highest revenue among railway stations in Kerala, with earnings amounting to Rs 262 crores in the last financial year.  Ernakulam Junction and Kozhikode follow closely, securing the second (Rs 227 crores)and third positions (Rs 178 crores) in revenue generation, respectively.
