Agatti Island welcomes its first customs station, paving the way for international tourists and ships, transforming Lakshadweep into a global tourism hub.

Kozhikode: In a major step towards positioning Lakshadweep as an international tourism hub, the first-ever customs station in the islands will be inaugurated at Agatti on Monday.
With this development, international tourists and ships will be able to directly access Lakshadweep. Although Agatti already has an airport, this marks the first time in Lakshadweep’s history that a customs facility is being established, said SK Rahman, Chief Commissioner of Kerala–Lakshadweep Customs and CGST.
The absence of a customs clearance facility has so far prevented international vessels passing near the islands from entering or anchoring at Agatti. Currently, only immigration centers operated by Lakshadweep Police function at Kavaratti and Agatti.
The new customs station, equipped with modern facilities, is expected to be a historic milestone for the region. According to the Customs Chief Commissioner, as more international vessels begin docking at Lakshadweep, its profile will be updated as a global tourism destination. The initiative is also expected to benefit Kerala, given its close connectivity with the islands.
Agatti was chosen over other islands due to its strategic location and its potential to attract a higher number of tourists. Along with sea transport, the move is expected to pave the way for introducing small international aircraft services to Agatti in the future.
Additionally, international courier services have been launched at Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram airports. Until now, Kochi airport had been the primary hub for sending items, including medicines, to foreign countries. With the new facilities, that dependency will be reduced. A new customs office with enhanced amenities will also begin operations at Kozhikode airport.
