Houseboats without pollution control systems will be barred from operating in Vembanad Lake from April 19.

Alappuzha: Houseboats operating without pollution control systems and valid certification will no longer be allowed to function in Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha from April 19, authorities said on Friday.
The directive was issued by the Port Officer and Registering Authority following an interim order of the Kerala High Court dated January 20, 2026. The court had given a three-month window for compliance, after which non-compliant houseboats would be barred from operating.

Vembanad Lake, one of Kerala’s most prominent tourist destinations, attracts visitors from across the world, with houseboat cruises being a major highlight. However, concerns over pollution and environmental degradation have led to stricter regulatory action.
According to the authorities, only those houseboats equipped with proper pollution control systems and holding valid certification will be permitted to operate in the lake. The move aims to curb environmental damage and ensure sustainable tourism practices in the region.
Officials emphasised that the restrictions are in line with the court’s directions and are necessary to protect the lake’s ecosystem from further harm.
