Actor and former journalist Rini Ann George, who earlier called out a young politician’s “who cares” attitude without naming him, has reacted to the rejection of Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil’s anticipatory bail plea. She described the court’s decision as the “beginning of justice” for survivors who have spoken out.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Rini said the experiences of survivors must be recognised seriously. She noted that after speaking out, she faced severe cyber-attacks, with critics alleging the accusations were fabricated. She said the court’s initial observations now indicate the allegations were not concocted, and added that the emotional strain she endured had been immense.

Rini said she felt fulfilled that her statements had helped her “sisters” pursue justice. She added that several others were still believed to be survivors and urged them to come forward and be part of the case.

She stressed that many women hesitate to speak publicly due to personal challenges, but survivors must not remain at home with their trauma. She also thanked the Congress leadership for supporting women in their pursuit of justice.

Who cares incident

Rini Ann George has been active in social issues and is close to Kerala opposition leader VD Satheesan, who once described her as “like a daughter.” She first drew attention after publicly recounting an unpleasant encounter with a young politician three years ago, without naming him. She also claimed several other women had similar experiences. Her suggestion that the politician’s attitude was “who cares” was widely interpreted as referring to Mamkootathil, who had used the same phrase while dismissing allegations. BJP and CPM leaders also suggested she was referring to the Congress MLA.

The controversy escalated after TV channels aired a phone conversation in which Mamkootathil can be heard making disturbing remarks about a child. In the conversation, he asked, “Who will you point to as the father of the child?” and the woman replied, “I will tell that to the child, others need not bother about it.” Earlier, he had said, “Won’t the public call the child a bastard whenever they see it?” to which the woman responded, “Will a child descend to earth without a father?”

Following the public outcry, Congress asked Mamkootathil to step down as Youth Congress president, which he did. The party did not ask him to resign as MLA, but the disciplinary action barred him from participating in upcoming legislative and party meetings. Despite this, he attended assembly and campaigned for candidates in local body elections.

Later, survivors approached the police and filed complaints. Mamkootathil sought anticipatory bail, which was denied by the court today.
