Thiruvananthapuram: A report suggests that the majority of women workforce in the state were forced to give up their jobs for taking care of children and elderly people at their homes. The report was submitted by the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission after conducting a survey among women in the state. In a recent national sample survey, Kerala stood last among the bigger states in South India, when it comes to the percentage of women in the total workforce. 

While 57 percent of women experienced the need to leave their jobs due to domestic responsibilities, a smaller percentage of them were also compelled to resign following their marriage or as a result of changing workplaces after marriage.

Major chunk of women between the age groups of 30-34 were forced to give up their jobs due to family commitments. 

A survey by the National Statistical Office had suggested that women spent over 7 hours every day on domestic chores. Meanwhile, their male counterparts do not even spend half of the time spent by the women on fulfilling family responsibilities.

It should be noted that 52.3 pc of women in the state join for higher education compared to the 34.5 pc men who enrol for higher education But the unemployment rate among educated women in the state stands at 17 percent..
