New Delhi: The state government has informed the Supreme Court that they have demolished 34 of the 54 illegally constructed cottages in Kapico Resort, near the banks of Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha. The government has also informed the apex court that the demolition of 20 more cottages will be completed by March 25.

Demolition of the resort takes place on all days except holidays, noted the affidavit filed by Dr Sharmila Mary Joseph IAS, the principal secretary of the Local Self-Government Department.

The demolition of the resort started on September 15, 2022.

The process is progressing in a phased manner under the supervision of the Alappuzha District Collector. The debris will be removed from the resort's premises starting on March 1, read the affidavit.

The affidavit also mentions that they have directed the resort owners to demolish the main building promptly without polluting the nearby water body.

Earlier, an organisation called 'Janasambarka Samithi' filed a contempt petition claiming that the government is not complying with the Supreme Court order to demolish illegally constructed resorts here. Following this, the court directed the government to complete the demolition before March 28, 2023.

It was in January 2020 that Supreme Court directed the government to raze down Kapico Resort, comprising 52 cottages, for flouting Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules and violating the Coastal Management Act.
