Poochakkal (Alappuzha): Procedures to demolish Kapico resort at Nediyathuruthu in Panavally in Vembanad lake has been initiated. The action is taken after the supreme court issued an order to demolish the resort as it violated the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules.
An official team including Alappuzha collector A Alexander visited the place as part of this. The supreme court rejected the appeal filed against the demolition of the resort in January 2020. Later, the collector ordered the Panavally panchayat secretary to demolish the resort.
The panchayat requested technical help from the collector as the resort is located in the middle of the backwaters and the debris is likely to fall into the waterbody. The procedures were delayed due to the Covid restrictions.
The PWD building wing, environmental engineers and Pollution Control Board were assigned to prepare action plan and estimate. A high level meeting in this regard will be convened in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.
The petition filed against the Kapico resort alleged violation of the CRZ rules and encroachment of the backwaters.
Subcollector S Ilakya, Cherthala tehsildar P G Rajendra Babu and Village Officer T A Harris also were in the collector’s team.
