Every year on October 15, the world comes together to celebrate World Students' Day, a day dedicated to honouring the remarkable contributions of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a beloved educator, scientist, and former President of India. 

The theme of World Students Day 2024 is ‘Empowering Students to be Agents of Change’. By emphasising their potential as leaders and innovators, this year’s theme aims to empower students to take charge of their education and future.

This significant occasion coincides with his birthday, commemorating a man whose impact on education and youth development continues to inspire generations.

Global tribute

The United Nations in 2010 recognised October 15 as World Students' Day to celebrate Dr. Kalam's legacy. His unwavering commitment to education and his genuine affection for students resonated throughout his life. Dr. Kalam believed that students were not just learners but also the future leaders capable of bringing about societal change. 

Dr. Kalam’s journey

Known as the ‘People’s President,’ Dr. Kalam devoted a significant portion of his life to inspiring young minds across India and beyond. His passion for teaching and learning left an indelible mark, encouraging countless students to reach their full potential. He was admired for his humility, strong belief in the youth's abilities, and advocacy for science and education as essential avenues for national development.

Born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam hailed from a modest background. His parents instilled in him the values of education and hard work, which guided him throughout his life. After graduating with a degree in aerospace engineering, he joined India's missile and space programmes, playing a crucial role in advancing the country’s technological capabilities.

Legacy of excellence

Dr. Kalam's outstanding contributions to research and science earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 1981, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990, and the prestigious Bharat Ratna. His work with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) solidified his reputation as a leading figure in Indian science and technology.
