Sources close to the investigation revealed that one of the critical witnesses is the judicial magistrate who was present during the inquest of the victim's body. The second key witness is the videographer who filmed both the inquest and the post-mortem examination.
In a bid to ensure privacy and prevent media interference, the entire hearing will be held in camera, meaning only those directly involved in the case will be allowed inside the courtroom. Since the trial began on November 11, all proceedings have been closed to the public and media.
Till now the witnesses of nine persons, including the parents of the victim have been recorded at the special court, said sources.
Three accused in custody
Three individuals are currently in judicial custody in connection with the rape and murder case. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is named as the "sole prime accused" in the first charge sheet filed by the CBI. The CBI is investigating the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
Two other individuals are also in custody: Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge (SHO) of the Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial inquiry by Kolkata Police before the CBI took over.
The CBI may include additional charges against Ghosh and Mondal in a supplementary charge sheet that will be filed later.
Accused makes allegations against former police commissioner
On the second day of the hearing, Sanjay Roy made a claim to the media outside the court. He alleged that former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal had conspired to falsely implicate him in the case. Since then, Roy has been transported to and from court in a special vehicle with tinted windows, preventing him from speaking to the media.
