Supreme Court rejects apology from Minister Vijay Shah for derogatory comments against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi after Operation Sindoor.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for making derogatory and communal remarks against Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had briefed the media on Operation Sindoor – India’s military response to Pakistan-sponsored attacks.
The apex court firmly refused to accept the minister's apology, deeming it insufficient and insincere. Justice Surya Kant criticised Shah’s response, calling his comments "crass" and expressing discontent with the apology presented.
"Where is that apology? What is that apology? What kind of apology have you tendered? There is some meaning of apology! Sometimes people use docile language only to wriggle out of proceeding! And sometimes they shed crocodile tears! What kind of apology is yours?" Justice Kant remarked sternly.
Public figures must act responsibly, says bench
The Supreme Court highlighted that as a seasoned politician and public figure, Shah should have been more mindful of his words, especially when speaking about a serving officer of the armed forces.
"You are a public figure. A seasoned politician. You should weigh your words when you speak. We should display your video here… This is an important issue for the armed forces. We need to be very responsible," the court stated.
Arrest stayed, but full cooperation with SIT ordered
While the court stayed Shah’s arrest for now, it made it clear that he must fully cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case. The bench directed him to join the investigation without delay.
Supreme Court has directed the SIT to submit a status report on the outcome of the investigation and posts the matter for hearing on May 28th.
