Multiple weather systems are driving rain and thunderstorms across Bengal, with heavier showers expected in North Bengal and Sikkim.

Kolkata: West Bengal is likely to witness intermittent rainfall and thunderstorms through the week as multiple weather systems continue to influence conditions over eastern India, with North Bengal expected to receive comparatively heavier rain.
The weather remained volatile across the state on Wednesday, with several areas seeing sunshine in the morning before clouds formed and rain later in the day.
While some places received light to moderate showers, isolated areas experienced intense rainfall.
According to the weather department, cyclonic circulations over southeast Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and North Bengal are influencing weather conditions across eastern India.
A trough extending across central and southern India is also contributing to the prevailing conditions.
The impact of these systems is expected to remain uneven, with clear skies and sunshine possible in some areas while thunderclouds could develop over nearby locations, resulting in short spells of heavy rain.
Heavy rain forecast for Sikkim, parts of North Bengal
North Bengal is likely to receive more rainfall than other parts of the state. Heavy rain is forecast over Sikkim and adjoining areas on Thursday, with the possibility of its influence extending to North Bengal districts near the hills.
South Bengal could also experience isolated heavy showers due to the development of localised thunderclouds. Kolkata and adjoining areas are expected to see rapidly changing weather conditions during the day.
Several districts may also experience gusty winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution during periods of intense thunderstorm activity and avoid open areas when lightning is observed.
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Bihar, Odisha and northeast India. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Nagaland and Manipur.
Meteorologists said the southwest monsoon has entered its withdrawal phase, but significant moisture remains in the atmosphere.
The interaction between the remaining moisture and various cyclonic circulations and troughs is contributing to continued rainfall over eastern India.
The weather pattern could remain relevant as Durga Puja approaches. Although conditions may temporarily improve after Mahalaya, indications of another low-pressure system have emerged for mid-October, coinciding with the Puja period.
What about Kolkata during Puja?
Kolkata could get some relief from the rain as Durga Puja approaches, with weather conditions expected to turn largely dry during the main festive days. However, a brief spell of rain cannot be completely ruled out, as isolated showers may occur depending on local cloud formation.
At present, there is no strong indication of prolonged or widespread heavy rain over the city during Puja.
Weather conditions could still change as the festival draws closer, so a clearer picture is likely to emerge closer to the Puja dates.
However, the weather department has not yet provided details regarding the system's likely origin or movement. Officials are expected to assess its development and trajectory as it takes shape.
For now, weather over Bengal is expected to remain unsettled, with rainfall intensity likely to vary significantly by location.
