West Bengal is likely to receive pending funds worth nearly Rs 2,700 crore from the Centre under the Jal Jeevan Mission project, bringing relief to the state amid ongoing disputes over central allocations.

According to sources, the Union government is preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the West Bengal government at the earliest.

Once the agreement is formalised, the Centre is expected to release the pending dues linked to the rural drinking water scheme.

The development comes after a key meeting between officials of the West Bengal government and the Union Jal Shakti Ministry.

During the meeting, the state reportedly submitted a detailed report on the status of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Bengal, including the number of household tap water connections already provided and the funds pending from the Centre.

The Jal Jeevan Mission, one of the Centre’s flagship schemes, aims to provide functional tap water connections to every rural household across the country. West Bengal has repeatedly claimed that large portions of funds under the scheme were pending, affecting implementation work in several districts.

Officials said the Centre sought updated data from the state regarding project execution, utilisation of previous allocations, and the current coverage of rural households under the mission.

After reviewing the report, the Centre is now moving towards signing the MoU, which is being seen as a crucial step before the release of funds.

Sources indicated that the release of Rs 2,700 crore could significantly boost ongoing rural water supply projects in the state and help speed up pending infrastructure work in several areas.
