Kolkata: West Bengal is once again staring at a spell of severe monsoon weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts on Tuesday.

Cloudy skies prevailed over Kolkata from early morning, while intermittent showers were reported from several parts of South Bengal.

According to the IMD's Alipore Meteorological Centre, the city is likely to witness intense spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 24 hours.

The weather office said rainfall activity is expected to intensify as the day progresses, with heavy showers likely across different parts of Kolkata and neighbouring areas.

Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly and Birbhum. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected across the remaining districts of South Bengal as well.

North Bengal is also likely to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. The IMD has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar over the next 24 hours.

With fresh spells of intense rain expected in the hills, authorities have warned of a heightened risk of landslides in Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Meanwhile, the plains of north Bengal are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall during the period.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, and to follow updates issued by the weather department and local authorities.
