Visakhapatnam: Panic spread across parts of Visakhapatnam early Tuesday morning after several residents reported feeling brief but strong tremors around 4:15 to 4:20 a.m. Many took to social media to share their experiences, describing the event as “really frightening.”
Social media platform X was flooded with posts from users in Visakhapatnam claiming to have felt the ground shake for a few seconds.
“I am from #Visakhapatnam and somewhere between 4:15 and 4:20 in the morning felt trembling movement on the floor. We felt it for 3 to 4 seconds. Sharp tremors that showed minor impact and we all got up from deep sleep with panic. It’s really frightening,” wrote one user.
Another posted, “Earthquake reported in Vizag. Anyone experienced it right now? Around 4:20 a.m.!”
Many others echoed similar experiences, saying the shaking lasted only a few seconds but was strong enough to wake them up.
What we know so far
Independent earthquake tracking platform Volcano Discovery flagged what it described as a “seismic-like event, possible earthquake” near Visakhapatnam around 11 p.m. GMT (4:30 a.m. IST). However, the site noted that no details were yet available on the magnitude or depth of the tremor.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the National Center for Seismology (NCS) regarding the incident.
Authorities have not reported any damage or casualties.
While residents continue to share their experiences online, local officials are yet to issue a formal statement. The brief but intense tremors have left many wondering whether Visakhapatnam had just experienced a minor quake or a shallow underground disturbance.
