The Hindu Kush is a seismically active region, and earthquakes in Afghanistan can also be felt across neighbouring Pakistan and parts of northern India

Kabul: An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck Afghanistan on Thursday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at 6:59:20 am IST at a depth of 126 km, the NCS said.
In a post shared on X, the NCS said, "EQ of M: 5.3, On: 01/10/2026 06:59:20 IST, Lat: 35.981 N, Long: 68.700 E, Depth: 126 Km, Location: Afghanistan."

The latest earthquake comes amid continued seismic activity in and around Afghanistan, particularly the Hindu Kush region.
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in Afghanistan on September 30, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred near Ashkasham at a depth of around 171 km.
The NCS also recorded a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Afghanistan on September 22. The tremor occurred at a depth of 175 km, around 83 km south-southeast of Fayzabad.
Earlier, on June 27, a stronger magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Afghanistan. According to the NCS, it occurred at a depth of 215 km, with tremors reported across parts of Pakistan and northern India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi-NCR. The USGS placed the epicentre about 43 km south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.
The Hindu Kush is a seismically active region, and earthquakes in Afghanistan can also be felt across neighbouring Pakistan and parts of northern India. The depth of an earthquake is an important factor in determining the intensity of shaking at the surface; deeper earthquakes generally produce less intense surface shaking than shallow ones of similar magnitude.
