Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay made a dramatic entry into electoral politics, mirroring the suspense often associated with his film appearances. His debut, however, was overshadowed by a tragic stampede in Karur on 27 September 2025, which claimed 41 lives.

The incident prompted widespread concern and led the state government to introduce standard operating procedures for political rallies and public meetings. Nearly five months later, Vijay has been facing a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the tragedy.

Despite the controversy, the 51-year-old leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a notable impact in his first electoral outing. His campaign effectively positioned the contest as a direct battle between TVK and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Party insiders attribute his performance to a strong anti-incumbency sentiment, coupled with his appeal among first-time voters, young people and women. His established fan base and personal charisma were also seen as key factors in boosting the party’s prospects.

Vijay’s campaign centred on a set of “super six” promises aimed at women, including the provision of six free LPG cylinders and monthly financial assistance.

However, as a political newcomer, he also faced criticism for delivering speeches in a style reminiscent of his film dialogues. His campaign was largely driven by his personal appeal, with observers describing it as a one-man effort.
