Gorakhpur/Lucknow: As a severe cold wave tightens its grip across Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 12 till January 1, citing serious risks to children’s safety.

The directive applies to all educational boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and the UP Board, and is effective immediately.

The decision comes amid plummeting temperatures, cold day conditions, and dense to very dense fog reported from several districts, particularly during night and early morning hours.

According to meteorological assessments, large parts of the state are witnessing temperatures well below seasonal averages, while fog is significantly reducing visibility, disrupting daily life and travel.

Reviewing the evolving weather situation, the Chief Minister made it clear that child safety remains the government’s top priority during the intense cold spell. He issued a stern warning to officials, stating that any negligence or delay in implementing the school closure order will invite strict action.

The education department and district administrations have been directed to ensure immediate and uniform compliance across Uttar Pradesh.

CM Adityanath also instructed senior administrative and police officers to remain in the field, closely monitor ground conditions, and respond swiftly to emerging challenges.

Stressing the need for proactive relief measures, he ordered district authorities to intensify arrangements for blankets and bonfires at public places to protect people from the biting cold.

Special emphasis was placed on the functioning of night shelters across the state. The Chief Minister said no one should be forced to sleep in the open under freezing conditions.

Officials have been directed to ensure that all night shelters are fully operational, clean, and equipped with adequate bedding, blankets, and basic facilities.

Highlighting accountability, the Chief Minister asked district administrations to identify vulnerable and needy individuals and ensure that relief materials and shelter reach them without delay.

He warned that district officials would be held personally responsible for any lapse in protecting the homeless, elderly, and other vulnerable sections during the cold wave.

With weather conditions expected to remain harsh over the coming days, authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, limit exposure to cold and fog, and cooperate with local administrations as emergency winter measures continue across the state.
