Actor-turned-politician Vijay has officially entered the electoral fray, filing nomination from Perambur and preparing to contest from Trichy East in a high-stakes debut.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Monday (March 30, 2026) formally stepped into the electoral arena, filing his nomination papers from the Perambur constituency in Chennai for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief’s move marks a significant moment in state politics, as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars transitions into a full-fledged political contest.
Vijay is set to contest from two constituencies, Perambur in north Chennai and Trichy East in central Tamil Nadu, in what is being seen as a calculated strategy to expand his party’s reach across regions.
While Perambur is considered a politically active urban seat with a strong presence of Dravidian parties, Trichy East offers a contrasting demographic mix, giving TVK a broader testing ground in its first electoral outing.
Arriving amid tight security and enthusiastic supporters, Vijay filed his nomination at the designated election office in Chennai.
Visuals from the venue showed large crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the actor-politician, underscoring his mass appeal and the curiosity surrounding his political debut.
Soon after completing the nomination process, Vijay launched his campaign in Perambur, addressing supporters and outlining his party’s agenda. He aimed at the ruling DMK government, raising concerns over law and order, crime rates, and the alleged drug menace in the state.
He positioned TVK as a people-centric alternative, promising transparent governance and youth-focused development.
Vijay had officially launched TVK in 2024, signalling his long-anticipated political entry. Since then, he has been building grassroots support and organisational structure across Tamil Nadu.
The upcoming election will be the party’s first major test against established players like the DMK and AIADMK.
Tamil Nadu is set to go to polls in a single phase, with all 234 Assembly constituencies voting on April 23.
As campaigning gathers momentum, all eyes will be on Vijay’s twin-seat gamble and whether his star power can translate into electoral success.
