Officials believe the couple perished after attempting to enter India illegally, driven by hope and a desperate search for a new life

Jaisalmer: In a haunting tragedy that unfolded on the scorching sands of Rajasthan’s desert, the decomposed bodies of a teenage Pakistani couple were discovered near Tanot Police Station, around 15 kilometers inside the Indian border, on June 28. Officials believe the couple perished after attempting to enter India illegally, driven by hope and a desperate search for a new life.
Jaisalmer Superintendent of Police Sudheer Chaudhary confirmed that the bodies—a boy and a girl, aged just 17 and 15—were found face-down and unrecognisable after lying under the relentless desert sun for nearly 8–10 days. The advanced state of decomposition had turned their skin black, making identification almost impossible at first.
The police team discovered the boy under a tree, dressed in a sky blue salwar-kurta, with a yellow scarf and a mobile phone nearby. About 50 feet away, the girl’s body lay in a yellow ghaghra-kurta, red-and-white bangles still on her wrists—a silent testament to a life abruptly cut short.
During the inspection, two Pakistani national identity cards were recovered. The boy was identified as Ravi Kumar, son of Dewan Jee, and the girl as Shanti Bai, daughter of Guloo Ji—both residents of Sindh province, just 60 kilometers from the Indian border.
"He wanted to live in India. He somehow entered Indian territory but unfortunately died in the hope of a better life,” said Dilip Singh Sodha, district coordinator of the Hindu Pakistani Displaced Union. According to relatives traced by the organisation, the couple had applied for Indian visas about a year and a half ago, but their request was denied. After a family dispute, they decided to risk the treacherous journey across the desert to reach what they saw as their “ultimate destination.”
The Hindu Pakistani Displaced Union, an advocacy group for Pakistani Hindu migrants, has taken responsibility for cremating the bodies, which are currently kept at the Community Health Centre, Ramgarh mortuary, after a post-mortem.
Due to their decomposed condition, the bodies cannot be repatriated to Pakistan. Meanwhile, the police have sought more information from the local foreigners registration office regarding the couple’s visa applications.
As investigators piece together this heartbreaking saga of hope turned into tragedy, the scorching desert stands as a silent witness to a dream that died before it could cross the border.
