Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Friday informed Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar that he has secured the support of 118 MLAs required to form the government in the state, with sources indicating that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place at 11 am on Saturday.

The development comes after intense last-minute negotiations by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief with smaller parties and independent legislators.

According to sources, Vijay managed to secure support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK), and an MLA from the Indian Union Muslim League, helping the party touch the crucial majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

Vijay met the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Guindy on Friday evening — his third meeting with the Governor since the Assembly election results were declared — and is understood to have formally reiterated his claim to form the government.

Sources said the meeting between Vijay and the Governor was brief.

The TVK founder had earlier staked a claim to form the government after emerging as the single largest party in the April 23 Assembly elections.

TVK stunned Tamil Nadu politics by winning 108 seats in its electoral debut, ending the six-decade dominance of the Dravidian majors, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

With the halfway mark fixed at 118, TVK initially fell short by 10 seats and subsequently began talks with smaller parties and independents for support.

Earlier in the day, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) extended unconditional support to Vijay. The VCK, which had earlier indicated support, is expected to make a formal announcement on Saturday.

Vijay later visited the CPI state headquarters in Chennai to personally thank Left leaders for backing his government formation bid.

The Indian National Congress has also extended support through its five MLAs.

As per current calculations, TVK and its supporting legislators have now crossed the majority figure despite Vijay eventually having to vacate one of the two Assembly constituencies he won — Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East — in accordance with Election Commission norms.
