Chennai: The nomination filing process for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 began on Monday, signalling a key stage in the state’s electoral calendar. Election authorities have issued strict guidelines to ensure a smooth, transparent, and orderly process across constituencies.

Key rules for candidates filing nominations

Candidates submitting nomination papers must adhere to strict regulations. A maximum of three vehicles per candidate is allowed, and these must be parked at least 100 metres from the Returning Officer’s office. Only the candidate and up to three accompanying persons are permitted inside the office to submit nomination forms.

Although the official nomination window spans eight days, only four working days are available for filing due to intervening public holidays, prompting candidates to plan submissions carefully to avoid last-minute complications.

Online filing and physical submission

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced the option of submitting nomination forms online via its official portal. However, candidates are required to submit the physical copies in person to the Returning Officer within the prescribed deadline.

For the 2026 elections, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will display a recent colour photograph of each candidate. Candidates must submit a recent photograph taken within the last three months along with their nomination papers.

In addition, candidates are required to submit a sworn affidavit detailing credentials by 3 pm on April 6, the final date for filing nominations.
