The killing of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar in August 1997 remains one of the most notorious crimes involving a prominent figure in the Indian music industry.

Mumbai: The firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday has brought renewed attention to a series of shooting attacks targeting film personalities and establishments associated with them over the past three decades.
Shroff escaped unhurt after three rounds were reportedly fired at him, while two people, including his driver, sustained injuries. Police have launched an investigation to identify the assailants and establish the motive behind the attack. A social media post claiming responsibility on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has also surfaced, although its authenticity and any connection to the shooting remain unverified.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks involving Bollywood figures, ranging from the 1997 killing of music mogul Gulshan Kumar to shootings outside the residences of actors and filmmakers in recent years.
Tiger Shroff firing: Fresh concerns in Mumbai
The shooting involving Shroff took place in Juhu, in Mumbai's western suburbs, on Sunday. According to preliminary reports, unidentified gunmen opened fire at the actor's car.
Shroff escaped without injuries, while his driver and an autorickshaw driver were reportedly injured. Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify those involved.
The investigation is also examining a social media post attributed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang that claimed responsibility for the attack. Police have not officially established the gang's involvement.
Rohit Shetty's residence targeted in February
In February 2026, five rounds were fired outside the Juhu residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the incident.
The firing triggered an investigation by Mumbai Police, with the gang's alleged involvement bringing renewed attention to security concerns surrounding prominent film personalities.
The incident also followed earlier attacks involving Bollywood figures, including the firing outside Salman Khan's residence in 2024.
Salman Khan firing: Attack outside Galaxy Apartments
In April 2024, two men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire outside actor Salman Khan's Galaxy Apartments residence in Mumbai's Bandra area.
Five rounds were fired outside the actor's home. The incident prompted a major investigation, with police arresting several suspects allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
A trial involving five accused — Vicky Gupta, Sagar Pal, Harpal Singh, Sonukumar Bishnoi and Mohammad Rafiq Choudhari — is underway. Another accused, Anuj Kumar Thapan, died in police custody in May 2024.
The attack renewed concerns about threats against Khan, who has faced repeated warnings attributed to members of the Bishnoi gang. The gang's hostility towards the actor has been linked to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, in which Khan was accused of killing two blackbucks while shooting for a film in Rajasthan.
The firing outside Galaxy Apartments became one of the most prominent recent cases involving an alleged shooting attack on a Bollywood star's residence.
Rakesh Roshan shot after 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai' release
In January 2000, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan was shot and injured in an assassination attempt in Mumbai's Santacruz area, shortly after the release of his son Hrithik Roshan's Bollywood debut, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.
Two assailants fired multiple shots at the filmmaker. One bullet struck his left arm, while another grazed his chest.
Roshan survived the attack and was taken for medical treatment. The incident sent shockwaves through the film industry at a time when the influence of organised crime in Bollywood had become a major concern.
The underworld's alleged involvement in the film industry, including threats, extortion demands and attacks, was a significant concern in Mumbai during that period. However, the circumstances and motive in individual cases must be assessed on the basis of the evidence established by investigators and courts.
Gulshan Kumar's murder: A landmark underworld-linked killing
The killing of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar in August 1997 remains one of the most notorious crimes involving a prominent figure in the Indian music industry.
Kumar was shot dead outside the Jiteshwar Mahadev Temple in Mumbai's Andheri area. The assailants fired 16 shots at him, killing the music entrepreneur.
His murder sent shockwaves through Bollywood and the music industry, raising questions about the security of high-profile personalities and the influence of organised crime.
Kumar had built T-Series into a major music company, transforming the Indian music market through film soundtracks, devotional music and affordable audio cassettes.
The case became emblematic of the dangers faced by prominent entertainment industry figures during a period when criminal networks were accused of attempting to influence film financing, casting and music businesses.
Kapil Sharma's Canadian restaurant targeted in shootings
The incidents involving Bollywood personalities and their businesses have not been confined to India.
Kapil Sharma's restaurant, Kap's Cafe, in Canada's British Columbia province was targeted in three separate shooting incidents between July and October 2025.
The repeated attacks brought attention to security concerns surrounding businesses associated with Indian entertainment personalities overseas.
