Varma mocked his education and background, falsely claiming affiliation with a defense family

New Delhi: A viral audio clip has sparked outrage after a woman telecaller was heard verbally abusing a CRPF soldier over a loan repayment issue. The woman, identified as Anuradha Varma, allegedly pressured the soldier with derogatory remarks, questioning his education and background while discussing the loan.
The incident initially appeared to involve an employee of HDFC Bank, one of India’s leading private lenders, as the call was presumed to be related to banking loan recovery. However, HDFC Bank quickly issued a strong denial, confirming that the woman in the audio is not employed by the bank. The bank condemned the abusive conduct, stating that such behaviour goes against its organisational values and stated it has no association with the individual.
In the audio, Varma mockingly said, "If you were educated, you would have worked in a good company. You are illiterate, that’s why you were sent to the border," and insulted the soldier’s family by attributing his hardships to his background. She also claimed to hail from a defence family herself while accusing the soldier of living on loans amounting to Rs 15-16 lakhs.
After widespread public backlash, an apology audio from Anuradha Varma reportedly surfaced, in which she expressed regret for her words, citing frustration but admitting her behaviour was wrong. She apologised to the soldier and expressed remorse for hurting the sentiments of the armed forces.
Authorities have launched an investigation to verify the facts surrounding the call and its origin.
