Several districts in Telangana have been placed on alert as the India Meteorological Department predicted thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall across the state between March 17 and March 20.

According to weather officials, rainfall began on March 17 across multiple districts, and the main spell of intense rainfall is expected from March 18 to March 20. Wind speeds may reach 40–60 km/h, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

The forecast indicates that parts of Hyderabad and surrounding regions could receive 40–50 mm of rainfall, while a few places across the state may see heavier showers of 60-80 mm during the peak period.

Officials warned that strong winds and thunderstorms could disrupt daily life and advised residents to remain cautious during the weather disturbance.

Farmers advised to remain cautious

The unseasonal rainfall has raised concerns among farmers, as crops ready for harvest could be affected by heavy showers or hailstorms.

Authorities have urged farmers to take precautionary measures to protect their produce and avoid staying in open fields during thunderstorms. People have also been advised not to stand under trees or near electric poles when lightning occurs.

Hyderabad may face traffic disruptions

Weather officials said that heavy rainfall is likely in Hyderabad on the afternoons of March 18 and 19, which could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion across the city.

Commuters have been advised to plan travel accordingly, as sudden downpours may slow traffic during peak hours.

Yellow alert in Vijayawada

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in Vijayawada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Weather officials said there is an 80 percent probability of rainfall in the city, influenced by a trough formed over the Bay of Bengal. The showers may be accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Farmers in the region have been advised to move harvested crops to safe storage locations to avoid damage from rain.

Heat continues in north Telangana

While rains are expected in several districts, parts of north Telangana, including Adilabad and Nizamabad, continue to experience intense heat. Health experts have advised residents to avoid direct sunlight between 12 pm and 4 pm to prevent heat-related illnesses.
