Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao was placed under house arrest by the Hyderabad police on Saturday, hours before the party’s proposed protest outside Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s residence intensified political tensions in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had announced a demonstration targeting the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of failing to clearly support the Women’s Reservation Bill during recent proceedings in Parliament.

The protest was part of a broader strategy by the party to corner the opposition over what it describes as a crucial reform for gender representation in legislatures.

Police intervened ahead of the planned march, restricting Rao’s movement and preventing party leaders from gathering near the chief minister’s residence.

Officials cited law and order concerns as the reason behind the preventive action. Reacting sharply, Ramchander Rao condemned the move, calling it an “undemocratic attempt” to suppress dissent.

He alleged that the state government was misusing police machinery to silence opposition voices and block peaceful protests.

The development comes amid escalating political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The BJP has been actively campaigning across states, seeking to portray the opposition as obstructing a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance.

On Friday evening, members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, staged a demonstration in Hyderabad, during which they burned an effigy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The protest underscored the party’s aggressive stance on the issue and its attempt to galvanise public support.

According to party sources, the BJP has instructed its state units nationwide to organise coordinated protests at district headquarters.

The campaign is aimed at building pressure on opposition parties and “exposing” their alleged reluctance to back the bill.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to continue its nationwide outreach in the coming days, framing the Women’s Reservation Bill as a defining issue in the political discourse around gender equality and legislative reform.
